Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Community Seed Storage Practices

Abstract

Community seed storage practices are important for preserving planting materials and ensuring the availability of suitable seeds for subsequent cropping seasons. Proper storage helps protect seeds from moisture, pests, contamination, deterioration, and loss of viability. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance on appropriate community-based methods for collecting, handling, storing, and maintaining seed quality. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ adoption of community seed storage practices. It will assess farmers’ access to agricultural advisory services and determine how such services influence their adoption of recommended community seed storage practices. The study will also examine the extent to which farmers apply advisory information in maintaining the quality and availability of stored seeds. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as proper seed drying, cleaning, sorting, packaging, moisture control, pest protection, storage container selection, labelling, regular inspection, and appropriate storage conditions. Attention will also be given to advisory activities including farm visits, farmer training, demonstrations, group meetings, extension communication, and distribution of technical information. These services may improve farmers’ knowledge and practical ability to manage community seed storage facilities effectively. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and adoption assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ adoption of community seed storage practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural advisory services may demonstrate higher adoption of recommended community seed storage practices. Advisory services may improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate drying, packaging, pest control, moisture management, and storage procedures. However, inadequate storage facilities, limited advisory contact, insufficient storage materials, poor maintenance of community storage structures, and limited financial resources may constrain effective adoption of recommended practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, community seed organizations, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on the contribution of agricultural advisory services to improved community seed storage and help identify areas where farmers require additional technical support. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in developing practical advisory programmes that promote effective community-based seed preservation. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can play an important role in improving farmers’ adoption of community seed storage practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen advisory services on seed storage, organize practical demonstrations, provide technical information on appropriate storage methods, and encourage regular monitoring of community seed storage facilities. These measures can support effective seed preservation, improve access to quality planting materials, and contribute to sustainable crop production.
