Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Hay Making Practices
Abstract
The study examines the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ adoption of hay making practices. Hay making is an important forage conservation practice that enables livestock farmers to preserve grasses and other suitable forage materials for use during periods of feed shortage. Proper hay making can help reduce forage wastage, maintain feed availability, and support adequate livestock nutrition throughout the year. Agricultural advisory services provide farmers with technical information and practical guidance on appropriate forage harvesting, drying, handling, and storage methods. The study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural advisory services on hay making and examine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended hay making practices. It will also identify the major sources of advisory information available to farmers and determine the types of guidance provided on forage selection, harvesting time, drying methods, moisture control, baling, handling, and storage. The study will consider practices such as harvesting forage at the appropriate stage, proper drying, regular turning, protection from rainfall and moisture, suitable bundling or baling, and appropriate storage of hay. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise livestock farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the sampled farmers. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation will be used to analyze the data, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to determine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ adoption of hay making practices. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ access to agricultural advisory services on hay making and the extent of their adoption of recommended practices. It is also expected to identify the commonly adopted hay making techniques and the major challenges farmers encounter during forage harvesting, drying, handling, and storage. The findings may further indicate areas where improved advisory support and practical demonstrations are required to strengthen farmers’ knowledge and application of appropriate hay making practices. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, livestock development agencies, policymakers, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of agricultural advisory services in promoting effective hay making. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical advisory programmes that address farmers’ needs regarding forage conservation and feed management. Improved hay making practices may contribute to reduced forage losses, better feed availability during dry periods, and more efficient livestock production. The study will conclude by assessing the contribution of agricultural advisory services to farmers’ adoption of appropriate hay making practices. Based on the findings, the study will recommend regular advisory visits, practical field demonstrations, timely technical information, and improved access to forage conservation guidance. These measures may enhance farmers’ ability to produce and preserve quality hay and support sustainable livestock feeding and production.
