Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Small-Scale Agricultural Value-Addition Enterprises

Abstract

Small-scale agricultural value-addition enterprises involve activities through which farmers process, package, preserve, or otherwise improve the quality and market value of agricultural products before sale. Such enterprises may include crop processing, livestock product processing, food packaging, drying, milling, oil extraction, and other farm-based processing activities. Value addition can provide farmers with opportunities to reduce post-harvest losses, improve product quality, extend shelf life, create additional income sources, and strengthen participation in agricultural markets. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with technical, managerial, and market-related information needed to establish and manage such enterprises. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ adoption of small-scale agricultural value-addition enterprises. It will assess farmers’ access to agricultural advisory services and determine the extent to which they adopt value-addition activities. The study will also examine the relationship between advisory services and farmers’ adoption of small-scale enterprises for processing, packaging, preservation, and marketing of agricultural products. The study will focus on advisory visits, technical training, processing demonstrations, enterprise management education, market information, financial management guidance, business planning, and information on value-addition opportunities. The value-addition enterprises to be considered will include crop processing, drying, milling, oil extraction, livestock product processing, packaging, storage, and other small-scale farm-based processing activities. Factors such as access to inputs, equipment, markets, finance, and extension information will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural advisory services and adoption of small-scale value-addition enterprises. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ adoption of value-addition enterprises. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural advisory services may demonstrate higher levels of adoption of small-scale value-addition enterprises. Technical training, processing demonstrations, market information, business guidance, and regular advisory contact may improve farmers’ knowledge and confidence in engaging in value-addition activities. However, limited access to processing equipment, inadequate finance, high operating costs, poor market access, limited technical skills, and insufficient advisory coverage may constrain adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural researchers, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, financial institutions, agribusiness organisations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information on the contribution of agricultural advisory services to farmers’ participation in value-addition enterprises and identify areas where advisory support can be strengthened. The findings may also assist agricultural organisations in designing programmes that promote farm-based processing, entrepreneurship, income diversification, and reduction of post-harvest losses. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can contribute to farmers’ adoption of small-scale agricultural value-addition enterprises by providing relevant technical, managerial, and market information. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and advisory agencies strengthen practical training, processing demonstrations, business management education, market information services, and linkages to finance and appropriate processing technologies to encourage farmers’ participation in sustainable value-addition enterprises.
