Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Supplemental Irrigation

Abstract

Supplemental irrigation is an important agricultural water management practice that involves applying additional water to crops during periods when rainfall is insufficient to meet crop water requirements. The practice can help reduce the effects of short-term dry periods, maintain crop growth, improve yield stability, and make better use of available rainfall. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with the information and technical guidance required to understand the principles and appropriate application of supplemental irrigation. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of supplemental irrigation. The study will assess farmers’ level of knowledge of supplemental irrigation practices and determine the extent to which exposure to agricultural advisory services contributes to improved understanding. It will also examine the forms of advisory support received by farmers and identify areas where additional technical information is required. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of identifying periods of inadequate rainfall, determining crop water requirements, selecting appropriate irrigation timing, estimating supplemental water needs, choosing suitable water sources, applying water efficiently, monitoring soil moisture, and combining rainfall with irrigation. It will also consider farmers’ knowledge of suitable irrigation methods, water conservation practices, irrigation scheduling, and the benefits and limitations of supplemental irrigation. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to agricultural advisory services and their knowledge of supplemental irrigation. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations to determine farmers’ knowledge levels, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine the relationship between advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of supplemental irrigation. The study is expected to reveal variations in farmers’ knowledge of supplemental irrigation based on their exposure to agricultural advisory services. Farmers who receive regular advisory information, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and training may demonstrate better understanding of when and how supplemental irrigation should be applied. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to crop water requirements, irrigation timing, soil moisture assessment, water availability, and efficient application methods. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation development agencies, water resource authorities, agricultural development programmes, farmers’ associations, policymakers, researchers, and organisations involved in climate-resilient agriculture. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening agricultural advisory programmes and improving farmers’ capacity to use supplemental irrigation as a water management practice. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge of supplemental irrigation and support efficient management of limited water resources. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and irrigation agencies strengthen advisory services through practical demonstrations, farm visits, training programmes, and accessible educational materials on supplemental irrigation. Farmers should also be encouraged to monitor rainfall and soil moisture conditions, assess crop water needs, and apply supplemental irrigation appropriately to support sustainable crop production.
