Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Drought Recovery Practices

Abstract

Drought is a major agricultural challenge that can reduce crop growth, soil moisture, farm productivity, and farmers’ income. Prolonged water shortages can result in crop stress, poor yields, crop failure, and deterioration of farm resources. Drought recovery practices are important for helping farmers restore affected farms and resume productive agricultural activities after drought conditions. Agricultural extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge, practical skills, and technical guidance on appropriate strategies for managing drought-affected farms and improving recovery. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of drought recovery practices. The study will assess how participation in extension education influences farmers’ use of recommended practices for recovering from drought conditions. It will also examine the extent to which farmers adopt appropriate methods for restoring soil moisture, managing affected crops, improving soil conditions, and maintaining agricultural production following drought. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, drought recovery practices, soil moisture conservation, supplemental irrigation, mulching, soil fertility restoration, replanting, crop management, water management, crop monitoring, farm rehabilitation, and drought-resilient agricultural practices. Attention will also be given to farmers’ exposure to extension education programmes, frequency of training, access to technical information, and practical demonstrations relating to drought recovery. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension education and adoption of drought recovery practices. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis may be employed to determine the relationship between agricultural extension education and farmers’ adoption of drought recovery practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension education may positively influence farmers’ adoption of drought recovery practices. Farmers who receive relevant extension education may be more likely to adopt practices such as soil moisture conservation, supplemental irrigation, mulching, appropriate replanting, soil fertility restoration, and improved crop management after drought conditions. The level of adoption may vary according to farmers’ access to extension education, availability of resources, farm conditions, and the suitability of recommended recovery practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, government institutions, irrigation organizations, non-governmental organizations, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening extension education programmes that address drought recovery and agricultural resilience. The study may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training materials and demonstrations that help farmers restore agricultural production after drought-related losses. The study concludes that agricultural extension education can play an important role in promoting farmers’ adoption of drought recovery practices by providing appropriate knowledge, skills, and technical guidance. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen drought recovery education, provide practical demonstrations of appropriate recovery practices, and improve farmers’ access to timely technical information on soil, water, and crop management following drought conditions.
