Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Ecosystem-Based Farming Practices

Abstract

Ecosystem-based farming practices involve agricultural methods that utilize and conserve natural ecological processes and resources to support farm productivity and environmental sustainability. These practices may include crop diversification, habitat conservation, soil and water management, biological pest control, agroforestry, and the maintenance of beneficial organisms within farming systems. Agricultural extension education provides farmers with knowledge, skills, and practical guidance that can influence their understanding and adoption of ecosystem-based approaches to farm management. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of ecosystem-based farming practices. It will assess the extent to which farmers’ exposure to extension education influences their knowledge and application of farming practices that utilize ecological processes for sustainable agricultural production. The study will also examine the contribution of extension training, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services to farmers’ adoption of ecosystem-based farming practices. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, ecosystem-based farming, crop diversification, agroforestry, soil conservation, water management, habitat conservation, biological pest management, biodiversity, natural resource conservation, and sustainable agricultural production. Attention will be given to farmers’ understanding and adoption of practices that promote ecological balance while supporting crop production and efficient use of farm resources. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension education, knowledge of ecosystem-based farming practices, and level of adoption. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of ecosystem-based farming practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and relevant agricultural extension education may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and adoption of ecosystem-based farming practices. Extension training, demonstrations, and advisory services may improve farmers’ understanding of biodiversity conservation, soil and water management, crop diversification, habitat protection, and biological pest control. However, adoption may vary according to farmers’ access to resources, farm size, labour availability, availability of planting materials, and perceptions of the benefits of ecosystem-based practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote environmentally sustainable agricultural production. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing practical training, demonstrations, and advisory strategies that address farmers’ knowledge gaps and encourage the adoption of farming practices that conserve natural resources and support ecosystem functions. The study concludes that agricultural extension education can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of ecosystem-based farming practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, field demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services on ecosystem-based approaches to farm management. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable practices that conserve biodiversity, improve soil and water resources, support natural pest control, and promote sustainable agricultural productivity.
