Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm-Based Cold Storage Technologies
Abstract
Sesame production is an important agricultural activity that contributes to food supply, household income, employment, and agricultural diversification. Intercropping sesame with compatible crops can provide farmers with opportunities to optimize land use, diversify farm outputs, and improve the overall efficiency of smallholder farming systems. However, successful intercropping requires appropriate knowledge of crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, timing, and crop management. Extension education can provide farmers with the technical information and practical skills required to adopt suitable sesame intercropping practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their knowledge of recommended sesame intercropping techniques, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of appropriate intercropping practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of information provided to farmers on intercropping management. The study will focus on extension education, sesame intercropping, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, crop combination, planting arrangement, spacing, planting time, crop competition, soil fertility management, weed management, pest management, and adoption of recommended intercropping practices. Information will be obtained from sesame farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in their farming activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected sesame farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended sesame intercropping practices. Farmers who receive regular extension education, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory support may demonstrate greater use of appropriate crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, and crop management techniques. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact contributes to better understanding and application of intercropping practices. The study will be useful to sesame farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at promoting efficient land-use practices and improving sesame production. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ specific challenges in selecting and managing suitable intercrops. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical demonstrations, farmer training, regular farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on sesame intercropping. Extension programmes should emphasize suitable crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, crop management, and timely field operations to support sustainable and productive intercropping systems.
