Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Flood Preparedness Measures

Abstract

Agricultural flood preparedness measures are important practices that enable farmers to reduce the potential effects of flooding on crops, livestock, farm infrastructure, and agricultural livelihoods. Flooding can cause crop losses, soil degradation, destruction of farm assets, disruption of farming activities, and reduced household income. Agricultural extension education provides farmers with information and practical knowledge that can improve their ability to anticipate flood risks and adopt appropriate preparedness measures. Effective extension education can therefore contribute to improved farm resilience and better management of flood-related risks. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of flood preparedness measures. It will assess the extent to which extension education improves farmers’ knowledge of flood risks and preparedness practices. The study will also examine the level of farmers’ adoption of measures such as early harvesting, drainage maintenance, farm water management, elevated storage, flood-resistant farm planning, weather information use, and protection of farm inputs and equipment. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, farmers’ knowledge of flood risks, extension contact, flood preparedness information, adoption of preparedness measures, drainage management, weather information, farm planning, input protection, and agricultural resilience. It will assess the sources through which farmers receive flood preparedness information and determine the extent to which extension agents provide relevant and timely guidance before flood events. Farmers’ characteristics and their exposure to extension education will also be considered in assessing their preparedness practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension education, knowledge of flood preparedness, and adoption of recommended preparedness measures. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of flood preparedness measures. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension education may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of flood preparedness measures. Farmers who receive relevant and timely extension information may demonstrate greater knowledge and adoption of practices such as drainage maintenance, early harvesting, safe storage of farm inputs, use of weather information, and appropriate farm planning. The level of adoption may also vary according to farmers’ access to extension agents, frequency of extension contact, farm characteristics, and availability of preparedness resources. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, disaster management authorities, development organisations, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that address flood risks and improving farmers’ preparedness before flood events. The findings may also assist agricultural development agencies in designing practical training programmes that promote timely flood preparedness and reduce potential agricultural losses. The study concludes that agricultural extension education can play an important role in improving farmers’ awareness and adoption of flood preparedness measures. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education on flood risk management, provide timely weather and early-warning information, promote practical demonstrations of flood preparedness practices, and increase extension contact with farmers in flood-prone communities. Such measures may improve farmers’ capacity to prepare for flooding and protect agricultural production and livelihoods.
