Effect of Agricultural Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Produce Drying Techniques

Abstract

Improved produce drying techniques are important postharvest practices for reducing moisture content, preventing spoilage, extending shelf life, and maintaining the quality of agricultural products. Traditional drying methods may expose produce to contamination, rainfall, pests, dust, and uneven drying, which can result in quality deterioration and postharvest losses. Agricultural extension education can provide farmers with practical knowledge and skills on improved drying methods that promote safer and more efficient preservation of agricultural produce. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of improved produce drying techniques. It will assess the extent to which extension education improves farmers’ knowledge and use of recommended drying methods. The study will also determine the influence of extension training, advisory visits, demonstrations, and information dissemination on farmers’ adoption of techniques such as solar drying, improved drying platforms, mechanical drying, covered drying, appropriate drying temperatures, and proper moisture assessment. The study will focus on agricultural extension education, farmers’ knowledge of produce drying, improved drying techniques, moisture management, solar drying, mechanical drying, drying platforms, drying duration, moisture assessment, produce quality, postharvest management, contamination prevention, storage preparation, and adoption of improved drying practices. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on drying techniques and determine the extent to which extension agents provide practical demonstrations and guidance on appropriate drying procedures. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension education, knowledge of improved drying techniques, and level of adoption of recommended drying practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of agricultural extension education on farmers’ adoption of improved produce drying techniques. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension education may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of improved produce drying techniques. Farmers who receive regular extension education and practical demonstrations may demonstrate greater knowledge and use of appropriate drying platforms, solar or mechanical drying methods, moisture assessment, suitable drying periods, and contamination prevention practices. The level of adoption may also vary according to farmers’ access to drying equipment, extension contact, type of produce handled, financial resources, and availability of appropriate drying facilities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, postharvest specialists, agricultural cooperatives, produce processors, government agricultural agencies, food safety organisations, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on postharvest management and reducing losses associated with poor drying practices. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing practical training programmes that promote affordable and effective produce drying technologies among farmers. The study concludes that agricultural extension education can contribute to improved adoption of produce drying techniques by increasing farmers’ knowledge and practical skills in postharvest moisture management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular training and demonstrations on improved drying methods, moisture assessment, appropriate drying conditions, contamination prevention, and preparation of produce for storage. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable and affordable drying technologies to improve produce quality, reduce postharvest losses, and increase the market value of agricultural products.
