Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Biological Pest Control Techniques
Abstract
The study examines the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of biological pest control techniques. Biological pest control involves the use of natural enemies and other biological methods to manage agricultural pests and can provide an environmentally sustainable approach to crop protection. Appropriate biological control practices may help farmers reduce dependence on chemical pest control methods, protect beneficial organisms, and maintain healthier crop production environments. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with relevant knowledge, technical information, and practical guidance on the appropriate use of biological pest control techniques. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension information on biological pest control and examine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended biological control techniques. It will also identify the major biological pest control methods known and used by farmers and determine the types of extension information provided on their application. The study will consider practices such as conservation of natural enemies, use of beneficial insects, application of microbial biological control agents, use of botanical-based pest management methods, and protection of organisms that naturally suppress crop pests. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise crop farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the sampled farmers. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation will be used to analyze the data, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of biological pest control techniques. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ access to agricultural extension information on biological pest control and the extent of their adoption of recommended techniques. It is also expected to identify the biological pest control methods commonly used by farmers and the major challenges affecting their adoption. The findings may further indicate areas where additional extension education, practical demonstrations, and technical support are required to improve farmers’ understanding and application of biological pest control techniques. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, crop protection agencies, policymakers, environmental management agencies, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of agricultural extension in promoting biological pest control. The findings may assist extension personnel in designing practical training programmes and demonstrations on the identification, conservation, and application of biological control methods. Improved adoption of appropriate techniques may contribute to sustainable pest management, reduced reliance on chemical control, and healthier agricultural production environments. The study will conclude by assessing the contribution of agricultural extension to farmers’ adoption of appropriate biological pest control techniques. Based on the findings, the study will recommend regular extension training, practical field demonstrations, farmer-to-farmer learning, and improved access to reliable technical information on biological pest management. These measures may enhance farmers’ capacity to use biological approaches effectively and support sustainable and productive crop production.
