Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Electronic Payment Systems for Farm Transactions
Abstract
The study examines the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of electronic payment systems for farm transactions. Electronic payment systems provide farmers with convenient digital methods for making and receiving payments related to agricultural inputs, produce sales, transportation, labour, and other farm-related activities. Their adoption can improve transaction efficiency, reduce dependence on cash, and provide farmers with electronic records of financial transactions. The study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services relating to electronic payment systems and determine the extent to which extension personnel provide information and practical guidance on the use of digital payment platforms. It will also examine the level of farmers’ adoption of electronic payment systems for farm transactions and determine the major ways these systems are used in agricultural activities. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires administered through an appropriate sampling procedure. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of electronic payment systems for farm transactions. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular agricultural extension services are more likely to adopt electronic payment systems for farm transactions. Extension services are expected to improve farmers’ knowledge of digital payment procedures, transaction security, and the practical benefits of electronic payments. However, limited digital literacy, poor network connectivity, inadequate access to smartphones, transaction charges, and concerns about digital fraud may constrain adoption. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, financial institutions, digital financial service providers, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of extension services in promoting digital financial practices among farmers. The findings may also support the development of extension programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge of electronic payment systems and safe digital financial practices. The study will conclude that effective agricultural extension can contribute to increased adoption of electronic payment systems for farm transactions among farmers. It will recommend strengthening extension education on digital financial services, improving farmers’ digital literacy, promoting access to reliable electronic payment platforms, and providing practical guidance on secure and efficient digital transactions.
