Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Biodiversity Conservation Practices

Abstract

Farm biodiversity conservation practices involve the management of crops, livestock, vegetation, soil organisms, beneficial insects, and other biological resources within agricultural landscapes to maintain ecological balance and support sustainable production. Practices such as crop diversification, conservation of natural vegetation, maintenance of field margins, agroforestry, habitat protection, and preservation of beneficial organisms can contribute to soil health, natural pest regulation, pollination, and long-term farm productivity. Agricultural extension provides farmers with knowledge, technical guidance, and practical information that may influence their understanding and adoption of biodiversity conservation practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of farm biodiversity conservation practices. It will assess the extent to which farmers’ access to agricultural extension services influences their knowledge and application of practices that conserve biological resources on farms. The study will also examine the contribution of extension contact, training, demonstrations, and advisory services to farmers’ adoption of recommended biodiversity conservation practices. The study will focus on agricultural extension, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, farm biodiversity, crop diversification, natural vegetation conservation, agroforestry, habitat management, field margins, beneficial organisms, pollinator conservation, soil biodiversity, natural pest control, and sustainable agricultural production. Attention will be given to farmers’ adoption of practices that protect and maintain diverse biological resources while supporting productive and environmentally sustainable farming systems. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension services, knowledge of biodiversity conservation practices, and level of adoption. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of farm biodiversity conservation practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who have greater access to relevant agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and adoption of farm biodiversity conservation practices. Extension training, field demonstrations, and advisory visits may improve farmers’ understanding of crop diversification, natural vegetation conservation, habitat protection, and the importance of beneficial organisms. However, adoption may vary according to farm size, labour availability, access to planting materials, available resources, production objectives, and farmers’ perceptions of the benefits of biodiversity conservation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote biodiversity conservation and sustainable agricultural production. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing practical training and demonstration activities that encourage farmers to integrate biodiversity conservation into routine farm management and resource-use decisions. The study concludes that agricultural extension can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of farm biodiversity conservation practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education, demonstrations, field visits, and advisory services on crop diversification, habitat conservation, natural vegetation management, agroforestry, and protection of beneficial organisms. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable biodiversity conservation practices that support ecological balance, natural pest regulation, pollination, soil health, and sustainable agricultural productivity.
