Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Livestock Manure Collection Practices
Abstract
The study examines the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of livestock manure collection practices. Livestock manure is an important agricultural resource that can be used to improve soil fertility and support sustainable crop production when properly collected, handled, and managed. Effective manure collection practices involve the regular gathering, separation, storage, and handling of animal waste from livestock housing and production areas. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with knowledge and technical guidance on appropriate manure collection practices and their benefits for farm management. Examining the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of livestock manure collection practices is therefore important for promoting efficient manure management and sustainable agricultural production. The study will determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of livestock manure collection practices. It will specifically assess farmers’ access to extension services and the extent to which they adopt practices such as regular manure collection, use of appropriate collection tools, separation of manure from other farm waste, collection from livestock housing areas, prevention of manure loss, safe handling, and proper movement of collected manure to designated storage or utilization areas. The study will also examine the contribution of extension visits, training, demonstrations, and advisory services to farmers’ adoption of livestock manure collection practices. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise livestock farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to agricultural extension services and their adoption of livestock manure collection practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of livestock manure collection practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension contributes positively to farmers’ adoption of livestock manure collection practices. Farmers who receive regular extension advice, demonstrations, and training are expected to demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate manure collection, handling, and movement practices. The study may also reveal variations in adoption based on farmers’ access to extension personnel, livestock production systems, availability of collection facilities, and farmers’ awareness of the agricultural value of manure. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, livestock development agencies, policymakers, farmer organizations, environmental management institutions, and other stakeholders involved in sustainable agricultural production. The findings are expected to highlight the role of extension services in improving farmers’ knowledge and application of proper livestock manure collection practices. Such information can support the development of extension programmes that promote efficient manure management, resource recovery, soil fertility improvement, and environmentally responsible livestock production. The study will conclude that agricultural extension can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and technical support for adopting appropriate livestock manure collection practices. It will recommend strengthening extension education on manure management, increasing practical demonstrations and farm visits, promoting the use of suitable manure collection tools, and improving farmers’ awareness of the benefits of proper manure collection and utilization. Improved extension support is expected to enhance manure management and contribute to sustainable livestock and crop production.
