Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Produce Stock Reconciliation Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of produce stock reconciliation practices. Produce stock reconciliation involves comparing records of agricultural produce received, stored, sold, transferred, or remaining in stock with the actual quantities available. Proper reconciliation can help farmers identify discrepancies, improve record accuracy, monitor produce movement, reduce losses, and support effective farm inventory management. The study will focus on the extent to which farmers adopt produce stock reconciliation practices following agricultural extension support. Specific areas will include recording quantities of produce received, maintaining stock records, comparing physical stock with recorded quantities, identifying shortages or surpluses, documenting produce movement, updating stock balances, investigating discrepancies, and regularly reviewing produce records. Agricultural extension is expected to provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills for maintaining accurate stock records and reconciling produce quantities. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to agricultural extension, knowledge of produce stock reconciliation, and adoption of relevant practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension contributes to farmers’ adoption of produce stock reconciliation practices. The findings may indicate improvements in farmers’ ability to maintain stock records, compare recorded quantities with physical stock, identify discrepancies, document produce movements, update stock balances, and review inventory information. The study may also identify challenges that limit farmers’ consistent application of produce stock reconciliation practices. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, produce marketers, storage operators, and policymakers by providing information on the role of extension in improving produce inventory management. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical advisory programmes that strengthen farmers’ record-keeping skills and improve their ability to monitor agricultural produce from storage through marketing and other farm operations. The study will conclude that effective agricultural extension can enhance farmers’ knowledge and adoption of produce stock reconciliation practices. It will recommend that extension officers provide practical demonstrations, training sessions, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on stock recording, physical stock checking, reconciliation procedures, discrepancy identification, and regular updating of produce records to improve inventory accuracy and reduce avoidable losses.
