Effect of Agricultural Extension on Livestock Farmers’ Knowledge of Feed Conservation
Abstract
Feed conservation is an important aspect of livestock production because it enables farmers to preserve forage and other feed resources for use during periods of pasture scarcity, dry seasons, and other times when fresh feed may be limited. Proper conservation methods such as hay making, silage production, drying, storage, and protection of conserved feeds from moisture and contamination can help maintain feed availability and reduce seasonal shortages. Agricultural extension services can provide livestock farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to effectively conserve and manage livestock feed resources. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on livestock farmers’ knowledge of feed conservation. The study will assess livestock farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services and determine their level of knowledge regarding appropriate feed conservation methods. It will also identify areas of feed conservation where farmers may require additional extension education and technical support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of forage harvesting, hay making, silage preparation, drying techniques, feed storage, moisture control, prevention of mould growth, protection of conserved feeds from pests and contamination, proper timing of forage harvesting, and appropriate utilisation of conserved feeds. It will also examine extension activities such as farm visits, practical demonstrations, livestock training, farmer meetings, field days, and agricultural information materials in improving farmers’ knowledge of feed conservation practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected livestock farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to agricultural extension services and their knowledge of feed conservation. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension exposure and farmers’ knowledge of feed conservation practices. The study is expected to reveal that livestock farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher knowledge of feed conservation practices. Extension activities are expected to improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate harvesting periods, hay and silage preparation, drying, storage, and protection of conserved feeds. However, limited extension contact, inadequate training opportunities, lack of appropriate storage facilities, limited access to conservation equipment, and insufficient knowledge of proper feed preservation methods may restrict farmers’ ability to acquire and apply appropriate feed conservation knowledge. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, animal nutrition specialists, livestock production experts, agricultural research institutions, government livestock agencies, non-governmental organisations, livestock development programmes, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote effective feed conservation and improve livestock feeding management. The findings may also assist stakeholders in developing practical training programmes and demonstrations on affordable feed conservation techniques suitable for livestock farmers. The study concludes that agricultural extension can contribute to improving livestock farmers’ knowledge of feed conservation by providing relevant information, technical guidance, and practical learning opportunities. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training through practical demonstrations, farm visits, field days, and accessible educational materials on hay making, silage production, drying, and feed storage. Livestock farmers should also be encouraged to adopt appropriate feed conservation methods and maintain proper storage conditions to ensure the availability of quality feed throughout the year.
