Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Botanical Pest Control
Abstract
Botanical pest control is an agricultural pest management approach that involves the use of plant-derived materials to control, repel, or reduce harmful insect pests and other organisms that affect crop production. The practice can provide farmers with locally available pest management options and may reduce reliance on synthetic chemical pesticides when appropriately applied. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical guidance needed to identify suitable botanical materials, prepare them correctly, and apply them safely and effectively. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of botanical pest control. It will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services and determine how extension contact influences their adoption of recommended botanical pest control practices. The study will also examine the extent to which farmers apply information and skills obtained through extension services in managing crop pests. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of botanical pest control practices such as the use of neem, garlic, pepper, tobacco, plant extracts, and other locally available plant materials for pest management. Attention will be given to farmers’ knowledge of botanical material selection, preparation methods, dosage, application timing, application frequency, storage, safety precautions, and pest identification. Extension activities such as farm visits, training programmes, practical demonstrations, farmer group meetings, field days, and advisory communication will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and adoption assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of botanical pest control practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher adoption of botanical pest control practices. Extension services may improve farmers’ knowledge of suitable plant materials, preparation methods, application procedures, pest identification, and safety measures. However, limited extension contact, inadequate practical demonstrations, lack of standardized preparation information, inconsistent availability of suitable botanical materials, and farmers’ preference for conventional pesticides may constrain effective adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, crop protection specialists, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on the contribution of agricultural extension services to the adoption of botanical pest control and identify challenges affecting farmers’ use of plant-based pest management methods. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing practical training programmes that promote appropriate and environmentally responsible pest management. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can play an important role in improving farmers’ adoption of botanical pest control practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, field training, and accessible information on the preparation and application of botanical pest control materials. Extension programmes should also emphasize appropriate dosage, application timing, pest identification, and safety precautions to support effective pest management and sustainable crop production.
