Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Transplant Shock Reduction Practices
Abstract
The study examines the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of transplant shock reduction practices. Transplant shock is a common challenge in crop production that may occur when seedlings experience stress after being moved from a nursery to the field. Appropriate management practices can help seedlings adjust to new growing conditions, improve survival, and promote early growth after transplanting. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with technical information and practical guidance on methods of reducing transplant shock and improving seedling establishment. The study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services on transplant shock reduction and examine the extent to which farmers adopt recommended practices. It will also identify the major transplant shock reduction methods used by farmers and determine the types of extension information provided on seedling preparation, transplanting conditions, watering, shading, and early-stage crop management. The study will consider practices such as proper hardening of seedlings, careful handling during transplanting, planting at suitable times, adequate watering, temporary shading, proper planting depth, and protection of newly transplanted seedlings. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise crop farmers who engage in transplanting activities in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the sampled farmers. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation will be used to analyze the data, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to determine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ adoption of transplant shock reduction practices. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ access to agricultural extension services on transplant shock reduction and the extent of their adoption of recommended practices. It is also expected to identify the commonly adopted methods and the major challenges farmers encounter in reducing transplant shock. The findings may further indicate areas where additional extension education, practical demonstrations, and technical support are required to improve farmers’ ability to manage newly transplanted seedlings. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, crop development agencies, policymakers, nursery operators, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the role of agricultural extension services in promoting effective transplant shock reduction. The findings may assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes on seedling hardening, careful transplanting, watering, shading, and early crop management. Improved adoption of these practices may contribute to higher seedling survival, stronger crop establishment, and improved farm productivity. The study will conclude by assessing the contribution of agricultural extension services to farmers’ adoption of appropriate transplant shock reduction practices. Based on the findings, the study will recommend regular extension visits, practical field demonstrations, timely advisory services, and improved access to technical information on seedling establishment. These measures may enhance farmers’ capacity to reduce transplant shock and support successful crop establishment and sustainable agricultural production.
