Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Awareness of Livestock Insurance

Abstract

Livestock production is exposed to various risks that can result in financial losses for farmers. These risks may arise from animal mortality, disease outbreaks, accidents, theft, natural hazards, and other unexpected events that affect livestock assets and farm income. Livestock insurance provides a financial mechanism for managing some of these risks by offering compensation for covered losses. Agricultural extension services can contribute to farmers’ awareness of livestock insurance by providing information, education, and guidance on available insurance options and their potential benefits. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ awareness of livestock insurance. It will assess the extent to which extension services improve farmers’ knowledge and awareness of livestock insurance schemes, coverage conditions, eligibility requirements, premium payments, insured risks, and compensation procedures. The study will also examine the contribution of extension visits, training programmes, advisory information, and extension communication to farmers’ awareness of livestock insurance. The study will focus on agricultural extension services, farmers’ awareness, livestock insurance, insurance coverage, insured risks, livestock mortality, disease-related losses, insurance premiums, compensation, policy conditions, insurance providers, risk management, livestock production, extension contact, and sources of insurance information. It will also identify farmers’ major sources of information on livestock insurance and examine the challenges that may limit their awareness and understanding of livestock insurance products. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension services, knowledge of livestock insurance, awareness of insurance products, and sources of insurance information. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ awareness of livestock insurance. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension services may have a significant effect on farmers’ awareness of livestock insurance. Farmers who receive regular extension information, training, and advisory services may demonstrate greater awareness of livestock insurance coverage, premium requirements, insured risks, claim procedures, and compensation arrangements. However, the level of awareness may also vary according to farmers’ access to extension services, livestock ownership levels, farming experience, availability of insurance providers, and accessibility of insurance information. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, insurance companies, agricultural insurance providers, livestock development agencies, government agricultural agencies, agricultural cooperatives, policymakers, development organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that incorporate livestock risk management and insurance education. The findings may also assist insurance providers and agricultural agencies in developing accessible information and awareness programmes that improve farmers’ understanding of livestock insurance. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can contribute to increased farmers’ awareness of livestock insurance by providing relevant information and guidance on livestock risk protection. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen education and advisory programmes on livestock insurance and collaborate with insurance providers to improve farmers’ access to reliable insurance information. Farmers should also be encouraged to obtain adequate information on available livestock insurance products and consider appropriate insurance options as part of their livestock risk management practices.
