Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Poultry Farmers’ Knowledge of Vaccination Scheduling

Abstract

Vaccination scheduling is an important component of poultry health management because timely and properly administered vaccines can help protect birds against preventable diseases and reduce mortality and production losses. Poultry farmers require adequate knowledge of vaccination schedules, vaccine types, timing, administration methods, storage requirements, and other relevant practices to achieve effective disease prevention. Agricultural extension services can provide poultry farmers with the technical information and practical guidance needed to improve their understanding of appropriate vaccination scheduling. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on poultry farmers’ knowledge of vaccination scheduling. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services and determine their level of knowledge regarding recommended vaccination schedules for poultry. It will also identify areas of vaccination scheduling where poultry farmers may require additional extension education and advisory support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of common poultry vaccines, vaccination timing, age-specific vaccination schedules, frequency of vaccination, appropriate administration methods, vaccine handling and storage, preparation before vaccination, and record keeping. It will also examine extension activities such as farm visits, training programmes, demonstrations, farmer meetings, veterinary advisory services, and distribution of poultry health information in improving farmers’ knowledge of vaccination scheduling. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected poultry farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to agricultural extension services and their knowledge of poultry vaccination scheduling. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between exposure to extension services and farmers’ knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal that poultry farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher knowledge of recommended vaccination schedules. Extension services are expected to improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate vaccination timing, vaccine handling, administration procedures, and disease prevention. However, inadequate extension contact, limited access to veterinary information, poor availability of vaccines, inadequate cold storage facilities, and insufficient training opportunities may contribute to knowledge gaps among some poultry farmers. The study will be useful to poultry farmers, agricultural extension agents, veterinarians, poultry health specialists, agricultural development agencies, government livestock departments, poultry associations, research institutions, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening poultry extension programmes and improving farmers’ knowledge of vaccination scheduling. The findings may also assist stakeholders in developing practical training materials and advisory programmes that promote timely and appropriate poultry vaccination. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can contribute to improved poultry farmers’ knowledge of vaccination scheduling by providing relevant information, technical guidance, and practical training. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen poultry health education through regular farm visits, vaccination demonstrations, training programmes, farmer meetings, and accessible educational materials. Poultry farmers should also be encouraged to follow recommended vaccination schedules, maintain proper vaccination records, and seek guidance from qualified veterinary and extension personnel to support effective poultry disease prevention.
