CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Cucumber is a widely grown vegetable known for its economic importance and nutritional value, making it a staple in many households (Ngarmsak et al., 2019). One method of improving soil fertility is through the application of organic fertilizers, such as cattle dung. 1.2 Statement of the Problem

Cucumber, a widely consumed vegetable, often relies on synthetic fertilizers, which can degrade soil quality over time (Abdul-Hamid et al., 2021). As a result, there is a pressing need to explore sustainable alternatives, such as organic fertilizers, to maintain soil fertility and promote healthy crop growth. However, the effectiveness of cattle dung in improving soil physicochemical properties and the growth and yield of cucumber at varying application rates remains poorly understood.

This study seeks to address this issue by investigating how different rates of cattle dung affect soil pH, nutrient availability, and the overall growth and yield of cucumber. Understanding these relationships will provide essential information for optimizing organic fertilization practices in cucumber cultivation, ultimately contributing to sustainable agricultural practices.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.    To evaluate the impact of different rates of cattle dung on soil pH and nutrient content.

3.    To find out the optimal rate of cattle dung application that maximizes cucumber yield.

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Hypothesis I

H1: There is a significant impact of different rates of cattle dung on soil pH and nutrient content.

Hypothesis II
H0: There is no significant relationship between cattle dung application rates and cucumber growth parameters such as height and leaf number.
H2: There is a significant relationship between cattle dung application rates and cucumber growth parameters such as height and leaf number.

Hypothesis III
H0: There is no significant effect of the rate of cattle dung application on the yield of cucumber.
H3: There is a significant effect of the rate of cattle dung application on the yield of cucumber.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it aims to provide empirical evidence on the role of cattle dung as an organic fertilizer in cucumber cultivation.
