Effect of Extension Advisory Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Solar Drying Technologies for Agricultural Produce
Abstract
Solar drying technologies provide an alternative method for reducing moisture content and preserving agricultural produce after harvest. Solar dryers can help farmers reduce spoilage, improve product quality, extend storage periods, and minimize losses associated with conventional open-air drying. However, the adoption of solar drying technologies may depend on farmers’ access to relevant technical information, practical knowledge, and advisory support. Agricultural extension services can therefore play an important role in creating awareness and providing guidance on the appropriate use of solar drying technologies. This study will examine the effect of extension advisory services on farmers’ adoption of solar drying technologies for agricultural produce. It will assess the extent to which farmers receive advisory information on solar drying and determine how such services influence their willingness and ability to adopt the technology. The study will also examine the nature, frequency, and accessibility of extension advice provided to farmers concerning solar drying practices. The study will focus on extension advisory services relating to the construction, selection, operation, maintenance, and appropriate use of solar drying technologies. Farmers’ adoption will be assessed based on awareness, ownership or access, frequency of use, and application of solar drying methods for agricultural produce. The study will also consider the use of solar drying for crops such as fruits, vegetables, grains, tubers, spices, and other agricultural products, as well as farmers’ knowledge of proper drying procedures, hygiene, moisture control, and produce handling. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and relevant agricultural records. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize farmers’ access to extension advisory services and adoption of solar drying technologies. Correlation and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension advisory services and farmers’ adoption of solar drying technologies. The study is expected to reveal that extension advisory services may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of solar drying technologies. Farmers who receive regular information, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance may demonstrate greater awareness and use of solar drying technologies than farmers with limited access to extension services. The study may also reveal that advisory support can improve farmers’ knowledge of appropriate drying procedures and encourage the adoption of improved methods for reducing post-harvest losses. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, food processing enterprises, non-governmental organizations, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at promoting improved post-harvest management and renewable-energy technologies. The findings may also assist extension organizations in developing practical training and demonstration programmes that help farmers understand the benefits and proper application of solar drying technologies. The study concludes that extension advisory services are important in promoting farmers’ awareness, knowledge, and adoption of solar drying technologies for agricultural produce. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular advisory services, practical demonstrations, and technical training on the selection, operation, and maintenance of solar dryers. Extension programmes should also promote affordable and locally appropriate solar drying technologies to encourage their wider adoption and support improved agricultural produce preservation.
