Effect of Extension Contact Frequency on Smallholder Farmers’ Farm Management Practices
Abstract
Extension contact frequency refers to how often smallholder farmers interact with agricultural extension personnel for information, advice, training, demonstrations, and technical support. Regular contact with extension agents can provide farmers with timely knowledge on production methods, farm planning, resource utilization, pest and disease management, record keeping, and other aspects of farm management. The frequency of such contact may therefore influence how effectively smallholder farmers apply recommended management practices in their farming activities. This study will examine the effect of extension contact frequency on smallholder farmers’ farm management practices. It will assess how the frequency of interactions between farmers and extension personnel influences farm planning, input management, labour utilization, production decisions, pest management, record keeping, and other farm management activities. The study will also determine the extent to which differences in extension contact frequency are associated with variations in farmers’ management practices. The study will focus on extension contact frequency, smallholder farmers, farm management practices, extension visits, agricultural information, farm planning, input management, labour management, record keeping, production decisions, and technical advisory services. Attention will be given to the number and regularity of contacts farmers have with extension personnel and the management practices adopted as a result of the information and guidance received. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected smallholder farmers using structured questionnaires and relevant farm records where available. Descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentage analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension contact frequency and farm management practices. The analysis will determine whether differences in the frequency of extension contact are associated with differences in the application of recommended management practices. The study is expected to reveal that more frequent extension contact may have a positive effect on smallholder farmers’ farm management practices. Farmers who interact regularly with extension personnel may have greater access to timely information and technical guidance, which may improve their planning, input utilization, production decisions, and general farm management. The magnitude of the effect may vary according to the relevance, quality, and consistency of the extension support received. The study will be useful to smallholder farmers, agricultural extension officers, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organizations, policymakers, agricultural development programmes, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving the frequency and organization of extension contacts and strengthening the delivery of agricultural advisory services. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing contact strategies that respond effectively to farmers’ management needs. The study concludes that extension contact frequency is an important factor in supporting effective farm management among smallholder farmers because regular interaction can improve access to relevant agricultural information and technical guidance. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, advisory interactions, demonstrations, and follow-up services to provide smallholder farmers with timely support for improved farm management.
