Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Cold-Chain Practices

Abstract

Agricultural cold-chain practices are important for maintaining the quality, safety, and market value of perishable farm produce from the point of harvest to final consumption. Proper temperature management, handling, transportation, storage, and distribution can help reduce spoilage and postharvest losses. However, many farmers may have limited knowledge and access to appropriate cold-chain practices and technologies. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant information and practical skills needed to improve their understanding and adoption of cold-chain practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of agricultural cold-chain practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their knowledge of recommended cold-chain practices, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of appropriate temperature-controlled handling and storage practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of cold-chain information provided to farmers. The study will focus on extension education, agricultural cold-chain practices, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, temperature management, cold storage, refrigerated transportation, produce handling, packaging, pre-cooling, storage monitoring, transportation management, postharvest preservation, and adoption of recommended cold-chain practices. Information will be obtained from farmers handling perishable agricultural produce to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in their postharvest activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of agricultural cold-chain practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of agricultural cold-chain practices. Farmers who receive regular extension education, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory support may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate temperature management, pre-cooling, cold storage, produce handling, packaging, and transportation practices. The study may also indicate that practical training and regular extension contact contribute to improved management of perishable produce after harvest. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, postharvest management organizations, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, agribusiness operators, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at reducing postharvest losses and improving the quality and marketability of perishable agricultural produce. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical education programmes on cold-chain management. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of agricultural cold-chain practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training, demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on cold-chain management. Extension programmes should emphasize temperature control, pre-cooling, cold storage, proper handling, packaging, transportation, and monitoring practices to support the preservation of perishable farm produce and reduce postharvest losses.
