Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Farmer-Led Seed Selection

Abstract

Farmer-led seed selection is an important agricultural practice that enables farmers to identify and retain suitable seeds from their own farm production for subsequent planting seasons. The practice can contribute to the availability of locally adapted planting materials, improved seed quality, and reduced dependence on external seed sources. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills on selecting healthy, productive, and desirable seeds based on appropriate characteristics and production objectives. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of farmer-led seed selection. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine how such education influences their understanding and use of farmer-led seed selection practices. The study will also examine the level of adoption of recommended seed selection practices among farmers who have received extension education. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge and adoption of seed selection criteria such as varietal characteristics, healthy plants, disease-free seeds, high-yielding plants, maturity, seed size, physical purity, seed viability, and resistance to environmental conditions. Attention will also be given to extension education activities including farmer training, field demonstrations, farm visits, farmer meetings, group discussions, and distribution of agricultural information. These activities may improve farmers’ ability to identify and preserve suitable planting materials. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and adoption assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of farmer-led seed selection practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to extension education may demonstrate higher adoption of farmer-led seed selection practices. Extension education may improve farmers’ ability to identify desirable parent plants, select healthy seeds, maintain seed quality, and store selected seeds appropriately for future planting. However, limited extension contact, inadequate technical knowledge, poor storage facilities, labour constraints, and farmers’ reliance on purchased seeds may affect the adoption of farmer-led seed selection practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on the role of extension education in promoting farmer-led seed selection and improving farmers’ access to suitable planting materials. The findings may also assist extension organizations in designing practical training programmes that encourage farmers to participate actively in seed selection and management. The study concludes that extension education can play an important role in improving farmers’ adoption of farmer-led seed selection practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training on seed selection criteria, provide practical field demonstrations, encourage farmer-to-farmer learning, and improve access to technical information on seed quality maintenance. These efforts can support the continued use of suitable planting materials and contribute to improved crop production and farm productivity.
