Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Insurance Claims Procedures

Abstract

Agricultural insurance provides financial protection to farmers against specified losses arising from events that can negatively affect agricultural production and farm income. Effective access to insurance protection depends not only on farmers’ participation in insurance schemes but also on their understanding of the procedures required to make claims when insured losses occur. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance on agricultural insurance claims procedures, thereby improving their understanding of the steps and requirements involved in reporting and processing claims. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural insurance claims procedures. It will assess the extent to which extension education improves farmers’ understanding of the procedures involved in reporting insured agricultural losses and seeking compensation. The study will also examine the contribution of extension training, advisory visits, information dissemination, and practical explanations to farmers’ knowledge of agricultural insurance claims requirements. The study will focus on extension education, agricultural insurance, farmers’ knowledge, insurance claims procedures, loss reporting, claim documentation, claim notification, policy requirements, assessment of agricultural losses, claim submission, insurance compensation, claim verification, insurance information, and farmers’ understanding of insurance procedures. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information about agricultural insurance and identify areas where inadequate knowledge may affect their ability to follow appropriate claims procedures. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education, knowledge of agricultural insurance claims procedures, sources of insurance information, and understanding of claims requirements. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural insurance claims procedures. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may have a significant effect on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural insurance claims procedures. Farmers who receive regular extension information, training, and advisory support may demonstrate better understanding of loss reporting, claim notification, required documentation, assessment procedures, claim submission, and other relevant requirements. The level of knowledge may also vary according to farmers’ exposure to insurance information, previous experience with insurance schemes, access to extension services, and participation in agricultural organisations. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, insurance companies, agricultural insurance providers, government agricultural agencies, agricultural cooperatives, development organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that incorporate agricultural insurance education and claims guidance. The findings may also assist relevant stakeholders in developing farmer-friendly educational materials and training programmes that improve understanding of insurance claims procedures. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to improved farmers’ knowledge of agricultural insurance claims procedures by providing relevant information, guidance, and practical understanding of insurance requirements. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies collaborate with agricultural insurance providers to provide regular education on policy conditions, loss reporting, documentation, claim submission, and verification procedures. Farmers should also be encouraged to obtain and retain relevant insurance information and follow established claims procedures when insured agricultural losses occur.
