Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Knowledge of Lettuce Production Practices

Abstract

Lettuce is an important leafy vegetable that contributes to household nutrition, income generation, employment, and agricultural diversification. Its relatively short production cycle and demand for fresh consumption make it a useful crop for smallholder farmers and commercial vegetable producers. However, successful lettuce production requires adequate knowledge of appropriate agronomic practices, particularly in areas involving soil preparation, water management, nutrient application, and crop protection. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant information and practical skills needed to improve their knowledge of recommended lettuce production practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of lettuce production practices. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine their level of knowledge of recommended lettuce production practices. The study will also examine the relationship between farmers’ participation in extension education and their knowledge of appropriate lettuce production practices. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of suitable lettuce varieties, seed selection, nursery management, land preparation, planting methods, spacing, fertilizer application, irrigation and water management, weed control, pest and disease management, harvesting, sorting, and post-harvest handling. It will also consider farmers’ access to extension agents, training programmes, field demonstrations, advisory visits, and agricultural information relating to improved lettuce production practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from lettuce farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education and knowledge of recommended production practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of lettuce production practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who have greater exposure to extension education may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of recommended lettuce production practices. Training, practical demonstrations, advisory visits, and access to reliable agricultural information may improve farmers’ understanding of crop establishment, soil fertility management, irrigation, pest and disease control, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate extension contact, limited training opportunities, insufficient access to improved planting materials, and inadequate technical information. The study will be useful to lettuce farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, horticultural organisations, research institutions, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, farmer organisations, and other stakeholders involved in vegetable production. It may provide useful information for identifying farmers’ knowledge gaps and strengthening extension education programmes. The findings may also assist agricultural organisations in developing practical training and demonstration activities that address the specific production needs of lettuce farmers. The study concludes that extension education is important for improving farmers’ knowledge of lettuce production practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, field demonstrations, advisory visits, and dissemination of relevant technical information on lettuce production. Farmers should also be encouraged to participate in extension programmes and gain access to improved production technologies and inputs to strengthen their knowledge, improve crop management, and enhance lettuce productivity.
