Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Knowledge of Livestock Record Keeping

Abstract

Livestock farming contributes to food production, household income, employment, and rural economic development. Effective livestock management requires farmers to maintain accurate records of important farm activities and transactions. Livestock record keeping enables farmers to monitor animal numbers, births, deaths, feeding, medication, breeding activities, sales, expenses, and income. However, inadequate knowledge of appropriate record-keeping practices may limit farmers’ ability to plan and manage their livestock enterprises effectively. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant information and practical knowledge on the importance and application of livestock records. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of livestock record keeping. The study will assess the extent to which extension education improves farmers’ understanding of different types of livestock records and their uses in farm management. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of the procedures involved in maintaining accurate, timely, and useful livestock records. The study will focus on extension meetings, training sessions, farm visits, demonstrations, advisory services, and information dissemination related to livestock record keeping. Farmers’ knowledge will be assessed in areas such as animal identification records, breeding records, birth and death records, feeding records, health and treatment records, production records, sales records, expenditure records, income records, and general farm inventory records. The study will also consider farmers’ understanding of how livestock records can support farm planning, monitoring, decision-making, and financial management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment items designed to measure their exposure to extension education and their knowledge of livestock record keeping. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ knowledge of livestock record keeping. The study is expected to reveal that extension education has a positive effect on farmers’ knowledge of livestock record keeping. Farmers who receive relevant training and advisory information may demonstrate better understanding of record preparation, documentation, updating, storage, and interpretation. The study may also identify areas of limited knowledge, particularly in financial, production, breeding, and animal health records, thereby highlighting specific areas where additional extension education may be required. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, government institutions, agricultural organisations, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may assist extension providers in developing appropriate educational programmes that strengthen farmers’ record-keeping knowledge and improve livestock enterprise management. It may also provide useful information for improving the delivery of practical training on livestock documentation and farm management. The study concludes that extension education is an important means of improving farmers’ knowledge of livestock record keeping. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen training programmes, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services on livestock documentation. Extension education should emphasise simple and practical record-keeping methods that farmers can apply consistently to monitor livestock production, expenses, income, health, breeding, and other farm activities for improved farm management.
