Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Knowledge of Seed Treatment Practices
Abstract
Seed treatment is an important agricultural practice involving the application of appropriate physical, biological, or chemical methods to seeds before planting to improve seed quality, protect emerging crops, and support successful crop establishment. Proper knowledge of seed treatment practices can help farmers reduce seed-borne problems, improve germination, and promote healthy crop development. Agricultural extension education can provide farmers with the technical information and practical skills required to understand and apply appropriate seed treatment methods. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ knowledge of seed treatment practices. It will assess how extension training, demonstrations, advisory information, and field-based education influence farmers’ understanding of appropriate seed treatment procedures. The study will also examine farmers’ knowledge of the importance, methods, timing, materials, and safety considerations associated with seed treatment. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of seed selection, seed cleaning, treatment methods, treatment materials, appropriate application procedures, treatment timing, storage of treated seeds, handling precautions, and the benefits of seed treatment. It will also assess farmers’ exposure to extension education through farm visits, training programmes, demonstrations, group meetings, and other agricultural information channels related to seed treatment. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate knowledge assessment instruments. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between exposure to extension education and farmers’ knowledge of seed treatment practices. The study is expected to reveal that exposure to extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge of seed treatment practices. Farmers who receive regular training, practical demonstrations, and relevant advisory information may demonstrate better understanding of appropriate seed treatment methods and their benefits. The study may also identify specific areas of seed treatment where farmers have limited knowledge and require additional extension education. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, seed producers, agricultural development agencies, government institutions, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for designing effective farmer training programmes, strengthening seed management education, improving extension demonstrations, and promoting appropriate seed treatment practices among farming communities. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge of seed treatment practices by providing relevant technical information and practical guidance. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension organisations strengthen farmer training, field demonstrations, and advisory services on seed treatment to improve farmers’ knowledge and support better crop establishment and production.
