Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Participation in Agricultural Input Supply Businesses

Abstract

Agricultural input supply businesses involve the distribution and sale of farm inputs such as improved seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, animal feeds, agrochemicals, farm tools, and other materials required for agricultural production. Farmers’ participation in agricultural input supply businesses can provide opportunities for income generation, improved access to farm inputs, and greater involvement in agricultural value chain activities. Extension education can provide farmers with knowledge and skills relating to input quality, handling, storage, marketing, business management, and responsible distribution of agricultural inputs. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ participation in agricultural input supply businesses. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine the extent to which they participate in input supply business activities. The study will also examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ participation in the purchase, distribution, marketing, and sale of agricultural inputs. The study will focus on extension training, advisory visits, demonstrations, business management education, agricultural input information, market information, and farmer group activities. Farmers’ participation will cover activities such as input sourcing, buying and selling of improved seeds, fertilizers, agrochemicals, animal feeds, farm tools, and other agricultural inputs. The study will also consider farmers’ knowledge of input quality, pricing, storage, record keeping, customer relations, and relevant input supply requirements. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education and participation in agricultural input supply businesses. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while participation indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ participation in input supply business activities. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to extension education may demonstrate higher levels of participation in agricultural input supply businesses. Training in input management, marketing, business planning, record keeping, and agricultural information may improve farmers’ knowledge and confidence to engage in input supply activities. However, limited capital, inadequate business knowledge, poor access to suppliers, market competition, regulatory requirements, storage challenges, and insufficient extension support may constrain participation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural input suppliers, government agencies, agricultural researchers, non-governmental organisations, financial institutions, and policymakers. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension education to farmers’ participation in agricultural input supply businesses and identify challenges affecting their involvement. The findings may also assist agricultural organisations in designing enterprise-oriented extension programmes that support farmers’ participation in agricultural input markets. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to farmers’ participation in agricultural input supply businesses by improving their technical, managerial, and market-related knowledge. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen enterprise-focused training through practical business education, input quality demonstrations, market information, record-keeping guidance, and linkages between farmers and reliable agricultural input suppliers and financial institutions.
