Effect of Extension Education on Livestock Farmers’ Adoption of Fodder Tree Management
Abstract
Sesame intercropping is an agricultural practice that involves growing sesame together with compatible crops on the same piece of land. The practice can contribute to efficient use of farmland, diversification of farm outputs, improved resource utilization, and increased farm income when appropriately managed. However, successful sesame intercropping requires adequate knowledge of crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, timing, nutrient management, and weed control. Extension education can provide farmers with the technical information and practical skills needed to adopt suitable intercropping practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their knowledge of recommended intercropping techniques, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of sesame-based intercropping practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of information provided to farmers on intercropping management. The study will focus on extension education, sesame intercropping, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, crop combination, planting arrangement, spacing, planting time, nutrient management, weed management, crop competition, field management, and adoption of recommended intercropping practices. Information will be obtained from sesame farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in their farming activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected sesame farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended sesame intercropping practices. Farmers who receive regular training, demonstrations, and technical advisory services may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, planting schedules, and resource management practices. The study may also indicate that practical extension education contributes to farmers’ ability to manage crop competition and maintain productive intercropping systems. The study will be useful to sesame farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at promoting suitable intercropping practices and improving the productivity of sesame-based farming systems. The findings may also assist extension personnel in designing practical training programmes that address farmers’ specific challenges in intercropping management. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on sesame intercropping. Extension programmes should emphasize suitable crop combinations, spacing, planting time, nutrient management, weed control, and field management to support sustainable and productive intercropping systems.
