Effect of Extension Education Through Audio Advisories on Farmers’ Knowledge of Farm Practices

Abstract

Audio advisories are a form of extension communication that uses recorded or transmitted audio messages to provide farmers with agricultural information, recommendations, and technical guidance. They can support the dissemination of farm information to farmers who may have limited access to written extension materials or who prefer oral communication. Extension education delivered through audio advisories can provide timely information on crop production, pest management, input use, soil management, and other farm practices, thereby potentially improving farmers’ agricultural knowledge. This study will examine the effect of extension education through audio advisories on farmers’ knowledge of farm practices. It will assess the extent to which farmers’ exposure to audio-based extension messages influences their understanding of recommended agricultural practices. The study will also examine the frequency of farmers’ exposure to audio advisories, the types of farm information received, and the extent to which the information improves their knowledge of relevant farm practices. The study will focus on extension education, audio advisories, farmers’ knowledge, agricultural information, extension communication, farm practices, crop production, pest management, soil management, input application, farm operations, information accessibility, audio-based learning, and agricultural advisory services. Attention will be given to the clarity, relevance, frequency, language, and accessibility of audio advisories and their role in communicating practical agricultural information to farmers.  A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge-based assessment questions designed to obtain information on their exposure to audio advisories and understanding of selected farm practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between exposure to audio advisories and farmers’ knowledge of farm practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and relevant extension education through audio advisories may demonstrate improved knowledge of recommended farm practices. Audio messages may help farmers understand production techniques, pest management practices, input application, soil management, and other agricultural recommendations, particularly when messages are presented in familiar languages and simple terms. However, the level of knowledge gained may vary according to farmers’ access to audio devices, frequency of exposure, language comprehension, farming experience, and the quality of the advisory messages. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, community organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening audio-based extension communication and improving farmers’ access to agricultural education. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing clear, practical, timely, and locally relevant audio advisories that complement face-to-face extension services and other agricultural information channels. The study concludes that extension education through audio advisories can serve as an effective communication approach for improving farmers’ knowledge of farm practices when appropriately designed and delivered. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen the development and distribution of relevant audio advisories using simple language and locally appropriate content. Regular dissemination, practical explanations, and reinforcement of key agricultural recommendations should be encouraged to improve farmers’ knowledge and support informed farm management decisions.
