Effect of Extension Methods on Farmers’ Knowledge of Modern Agricultural Practices
Abstract
Agricultural extension methods are important channels through which farmers receive information, technical guidance, and practical knowledge about improved agricultural practices. Extension methods may include individual farm visits, group meetings, demonstrations, field days, farmer training, radio programmes, mobile communication, and other information delivery approaches. The choice and effectiveness of these methods can influence how easily farmers understand and apply modern agricultural knowledge in their farming activities. This study will examine the effect of extension methods on farmers’ knowledge of modern agricultural practices. It will assess how different extension approaches influence farmers’ understanding of improved crop production, soil management, pest and disease control, fertilizer application, mechanization, post-harvest handling, and other modern farming techniques. The study will also compare farmers’ knowledge levels according to their exposure to different extension methods. The study will focus on extension methods, farmers’ knowledge, modern agricultural practices, individual farm visits, group extension, field demonstrations, farmer training, mass media, mobile communication, agricultural information, improved farming techniques, and extension delivery. Attention will be given to the frequency, accessibility, relevance, and clarity of information delivered through different extension methods and the level of knowledge acquired by farmers. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment questions. Descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentage analysis, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension methods and farmers’ knowledge of modern agricultural practices. Comparative analysis will also be used to assess differences in knowledge levels among farmers exposed to different extension methods. The study is expected to reveal that extension methods may have a significant effect on farmers’ knowledge of modern agricultural practices. Methods that provide practical demonstrations, direct interaction, and timely information may contribute to better understanding of recommended farming techniques. However, the level of knowledge gained may vary according to the frequency, accessibility, relevance, and effectiveness of the extension method used. The study will be useful to agricultural extension officers, farmers, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organizations, agricultural development programmes, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for selecting and improving extension methods that effectively communicate modern agricultural information to farmers. The findings may also assist extension agencies in designing information delivery programmes that respond to farmers’ learning needs and local conditions. The study concludes that appropriate extension methods are important for improving farmers’ knowledge of modern agricultural practices because they provide channels for communicating relevant technical information and practical guidance. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies use suitable combinations of individual, group, demonstration, mass media, and digital extension methods to improve farmers’ access to understandable and timely agricultural information.
