Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Waste Segregation

Abstract

The study examines the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of agricultural waste segregation, focusing on how agricultural extension support influences farmers’ practices of separating different types of waste generated from farming activities. Agricultural waste segregation is important for proper waste management because it enables farmers to distinguish organic materials, recyclable materials, hazardous waste, and other waste categories for appropriate treatment, reuse, recycling, or disposal. Effective segregation can reduce environmental pollution, improve farm sanitation, conserve useful resources, and promote sustainable agricultural production. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ access to agricultural extension services and determine their level of adoption of agricultural waste segregation practices. It will examine extension activities such as farm visits, training programmes, field demonstrations, group meetings, and advisory services. The study will also assess farmers’ practices in separating crop residues, animal waste, plastic materials, used containers, chemical-related waste, and other agricultural waste according to their appropriate management requirements. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to extension services and their adoption of agricultural waste segregation practices. The data collected will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of agricultural waste segregation. The study is expected to find that farmers who have regular access to extension services demonstrate greater awareness and adoption of agricultural waste segregation practices. Extension services may improve farmers’ knowledge of waste classification, safe handling, storage, reuse, recycling, and disposal procedures. Practical demonstrations and direct technical guidance may further encourage farmers to separate waste according to its characteristics and potential use. However, inadequate extension contact, limited waste management facilities, insufficient information, and lack of suitable storage containers may constrain adoption. The findings are expected to provide useful information to agricultural extension officers, environmental agencies, policymakers, development organizations, and farmers’ groups on the role of extension services in promoting effective agricultural waste management. Strengthening extension education through practical demonstrations, regular farm visits, farmer training, and accessible waste management information may encourage wider adoption of appropriate waste segregation practices. The study will conclude that effective extension services can contribute to increased adoption of agricultural waste segregation by improving farmers’ knowledge, skills, and awareness of appropriate waste management procedures. It will recommend increased extension contact, practical training on waste classification and segregation, improved access to suitable waste storage facilities, and stronger collaboration among extension personnel, farmers, and environmental stakeholders to promote cleaner and more sustainable agricultural production.
