Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Emergency Contact Procedures

Abstract

Emergency contact procedures are important for enabling farmers to communicate quickly with relevant persons and organisations when farm-related emergencies occur. Agricultural emergencies such as injuries, fires, flooding, livestock incidents, equipment failures, and other hazards may require immediate communication and assistance. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with information on appropriate emergency contacts, reporting channels, communication procedures, and the actions required when urgent farm situations arise. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of emergency contact procedures. It will assess the extent to which agricultural extension services improve farmers’ awareness and use of appropriate emergency contact procedures. The study will also determine the influence of extension education, advisory visits, training sessions, and demonstrations on farmers’ ability to identify relevant emergency contacts and communicate farm emergencies promptly. The study will focus on extension services, emergency contact procedures, farmers’ knowledge of emergency contacts, emergency reporting, communication channels, agricultural safety, farm risk management, emergency response, extension education, and information dissemination. It will also assess farmers’ sources of emergency contact information and determine the extent to which extension agents provide guidance on contacting health facilities, emergency response agencies, agricultural authorities, veterinary services, local authorities, and other relevant support providers. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension services, knowledge of emergency contacts, and adoption of recommended emergency contact procedures. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of emergency contact procedures. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of emergency contact procedures. Farmers who receive regular extension education and advisory support may demonstrate greater awareness of appropriate emergency contacts and improved ability to communicate farm emergencies. The study may also reveal differences in adoption according to the frequency of extension contact, access to communication facilities, participation in farmer training programmes, and availability of emergency information. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, emergency response agencies, agricultural development organisations, health and veterinary service providers, local authorities, cooperatives, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening agricultural extension programmes that incorporate emergency communication and preparedness. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing accessible emergency contact systems and improving the dissemination of emergency information among farming communities. The study concludes that extension services can contribute to improved adoption of emergency contact procedures among farmers by providing relevant information, guidance, and practical training. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies regularly educate farmers on appropriate emergency contacts, reporting channels, and communication procedures. Extension programmes should also promote accessible emergency contact lists and strengthen collaboration with relevant emergency and support agencies to improve farmers’ preparedness and response to farm emergencies.
