Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Drainage Maintenance Practices

Abstract

Farm drainage maintenance involves the regular inspection, cleaning, repair, and management of drainage channels and structures to ensure the effective removal of excess water from agricultural fields. Proper drainage maintenance is important for preventing waterlogging, soil degradation, erosion, crop damage, and reduced farm productivity. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant knowledge, technical guidance, demonstrations, and advisory support needed to adopt appropriate farm drainage maintenance practices. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of farm drainage maintenance practices. The study will assess the extent to which farmers receive extension information and advisory support on drainage maintenance and determine how such services influence their adoption of recommended maintenance practices. It will also examine the role of extension agents in educating farmers on the importance of maintaining functional drainage systems. The study will focus on extension contact, extension training, advisory visits, demonstration activities, drainage maintenance information, farmers’ knowledge of drainage management, cleaning of drainage channels, removal of silt and weeds, repair of damaged drainage structures, prevention of blockage, and regular inspection of farm drainage systems. It will also consider farmers’ access to extension services and the frequency with which they receive technical information relating to farm drainage maintenance. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension services and adoption of farm drainage maintenance practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of recommended drainage maintenance practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of farm drainage maintenance practices. Farmers with greater access to extension information, training, demonstrations, and advisory visits may demonstrate higher levels of adoption of appropriate drainage maintenance practices. The study may also reveal that inadequate extension contact, limited technical knowledge, labour constraints, and insufficient maintenance resources can restrict farmers’ ability to maintain drainage facilities effectively. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation authorities, agricultural development agencies, rural development organizations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension services to effective farm drainage management and sustainable agricultural production. The findings may also assist extension organizations in developing practical training programmes that equip farmers with appropriate skills for maintaining drainage systems and reducing problems associated with excess water on farmland. The study concludes that extension services are an important consideration in promoting farmers’ adoption of farm drainage maintenance practices because effective advisory support can improve farmers’ knowledge and practical skills in managing drainage facilities. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through regular advisory visits, practical demonstrations, and training on drainage maintenance, while relevant agricultural authorities should support farmers with appropriate technical guidance and resources for sustaining functional farm drainage systems.
