Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Flood-Resilient Farm Practices

Abstract

Flood-resilient farm practices are agricultural practices and management measures that help farmers reduce the damage caused by flooding and maintain farm productivity during and after flood events. Such practices are important for protecting crops, soil, farm infrastructure, livestock, and other agricultural resources from flood-related losses. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with timely information, technical guidance, and practical support needed to understand and adopt appropriate flood-resilient practices. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of flood-resilient farm practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services relating to flood preparedness and management and determine how such services influence their adoption of recommended resilience practices. It will also examine the role of extension agents in providing farmers with information and advisory support for reducing the effects of flooding on agricultural production. The study will focus on extension contact, advisory visits, extension training, flood-risk information, early warning information, drainage management, raised-bed farming, appropriate crop selection, soil conservation, water-flow management, farm infrastructure protection, crop recovery practices, and other measures used to reduce flood-related agricultural losses. It will also consider farmers’ access to flood-related extension information and participation in practical demonstrations and resilience programmes. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to extension services and adoption of flood-resilient farm practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of flood-resilient agricultural practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of flood-resilient farm practices. Farmers with greater access to extension information, early warnings, advisory visits, and practical training may demonstrate higher adoption of appropriate drainage management, raised-bed cultivation, suitable crop selection, soil protection, water-flow management, and farm recovery practices. The study may also reveal that inadequate extension contact, limited access to timely flood information, financial constraints, and inadequate farm infrastructure can restrict farmers’ adoption of flood-resilient practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, disaster management agencies, agricultural development organizations, environmental agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension services to strengthening farmers’ capacity to prepare for and manage flood-related risks. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing practical extension programmes that promote flood resilience and reduce agricultural losses associated with flooding. The study concludes that extension services are important in promoting farmers’ adoption of flood-resilient farm practices because timely information and technical guidance can improve farmers’ capacity to prepare for and respond to flood risks. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular advisory visits, practical demonstrations, early warning dissemination, and farmer education on drainage management, resilient crop practices, soil conservation, farm infrastructure protection, and post-flood recovery measures to support resilient and sustainable agricultural production.
