Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Irrigation Equipment Calibration

Abstract

Irrigation equipment calibration involves adjusting and checking irrigation equipment to ensure that pumps, sprinklers, emitters, valves, and other components deliver water at the intended rate and pressure. Proper calibration is important for achieving uniform water application, reducing water wastage, improving irrigation efficiency, and supporting healthy crop development. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with technical information and practical guidance needed to understand and adopt appropriate irrigation equipment calibration practices. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of irrigation equipment calibration. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services related to irrigation equipment management and determine how such services influence their adoption of calibration practices. It will also examine the role of extension agents in providing farmers with technical knowledge, demonstrations, and advisory support on the proper adjustment and operation of irrigation equipment. The study will focus on extension contact, extension training, advisory visits, practical demonstrations, irrigation equipment knowledge, calibration procedures, equipment adjustment, water application rates, operating pressure, irrigation uniformity, and maintenance practices. It will also consider farmers’ access to technical information on the calibration of pumps, sprinklers, drip systems, emitters, valves, and other irrigation equipment used in agricultural production. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected irrigation farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension services and adoption of irrigation equipment calibration practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of irrigation equipment calibration. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of irrigation equipment calibration practices. Farmers who receive regular technical advice, training, and practical demonstrations may demonstrate greater understanding and application of appropriate calibration procedures. The study may also reveal that limited access to extension personnel, inadequate technical knowledge, lack of calibration tools, equipment complexity, and maintenance costs can constrain farmers’ adoption of proper irrigation equipment calibration. The study will be useful to irrigation farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation authorities, agricultural development agencies, irrigation equipment suppliers, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information on the contribution of extension services to the effective management of irrigation equipment. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ technical capacity to calibrate irrigation equipment and achieve efficient water application. The study concludes that extension services are important in promoting farmers’ adoption of irrigation equipment calibration because appropriate technical guidance can improve farmers’ knowledge and practical skills in managing irrigation systems. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen training and demonstration activities on irrigation equipment calibration, while irrigation authorities and relevant agricultural organizations should provide farmers with appropriate technical support and accessible calibration resources to promote efficient and sustainable irrigation management.
