Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Livestock Performance Recording

Abstract

Livestock performance recording is an important farm management practice that enables farmers to monitor the growth, reproductive performance, health, productivity, and overall development of individual animals. Accurate performance records provide useful information for identifying productive animals, making selection and breeding decisions, monitoring herd performance, and improving livestock management. Extension services can provide farmers with the technical knowledge and practical guidance needed to understand and adopt appropriate performance recording practices. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of livestock performance recording. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ access to extension services and determine how such services influence their adoption of livestock performance recording practices. It will examine farmers’ exposure to extension visits, training, demonstrations, advisory services, and educational materials relating to livestock performance recording. The study will also assess the extent to which farmers record information on animal growth, body weight, milk or meat production, reproductive performance, health status, feed utilisation, and other relevant performance indicators. The study will focus on extension services, farmers, livestock performance recording, growth records, production records, reproductive records, health records, animal identification, performance monitoring, livestock selection, breeding decisions, herd management, farm records, and livestock productivity. Information will be obtained on farmers’ knowledge and application of recommended performance recording practices and the sources of information available to them. The study will also identify challenges such as inadequate extension contact, limited record-keeping skills, lack of recording materials, difficulty in measuring animal performance, and limited awareness of the benefits of performance records. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from livestock farmers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on access to extension services and adoption of livestock performance recording practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Inferential techniques such as correlation and regression analysis may also be used to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of livestock performance recording. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of livestock performance recording practices. Farmers who receive regular extension training, farm visits, demonstrations, and advisory information may demonstrate greater knowledge and improved use of records relating to animal growth, production, reproduction, health, and productivity. The study may also reveal that inadequate extension coverage, limited access to recording materials and weighing equipment, low technical knowledge, and difficulties in maintaining accurate records could constrain consistent adoption. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, animal production professionals, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in livestock development. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on livestock performance monitoring and improving farmers’ capacity to use performance records for management and selection decisions. The findings may also assist relevant organisations in developing simple and affordable recording systems that can be adopted by farmers under different livestock production conditions. The study concludes that extension services are important for improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of livestock performance recording practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and livestock development organisations should provide regular training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services on performance recording and data management. Farmers should be encouraged to maintain accurate records of growth, production, reproduction, health, and other relevant performance indicators to support informed livestock management, selection decisions, and improved productivity.
