Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Opportunity Identification Techniques

Abstract

Opportunity identification techniques involve the methods used by farmers to recognize, evaluate, and select viable opportunities for improving agricultural production and developing farm-based enterprises. The ability to identify opportunities can help farmers respond to changing market conditions, recognize unmet customer needs, identify profitable agricultural activities, and make better use of available resources. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant information, advisory support, and practical education that may improve their ability to identify and assess agricultural opportunities. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of opportunity identification techniques. It will assess how exposure to extension services influences farmers’ use of techniques for identifying agricultural production, marketing, processing, and agribusiness opportunities. The study will also determine the extent to which farmers apply opportunity identification techniques in making decisions concerning their agricultural enterprises. The study will focus on extension services, market observation, customer needs identification, identification of emerging agricultural enterprises, market information analysis, resource assessment, opportunity evaluation, identification of value-addition opportunities, competitor observation, and identification of changing consumer preferences. It will also examine farmers’ access to extension information and advisory support relating to agricultural entrepreneurship and enterprise development. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension services and their adoption of opportunity identification techniques. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of opportunity identification techniques. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of opportunity identification techniques. Farmers who receive regular extension information and advisory support may demonstrate greater use of market observation, customer needs assessment, enterprise opportunity evaluation, and identification of emerging agricultural business opportunities. The findings may also indicate that extension services improve farmers’ awareness of changes in agricultural markets and encourage them to explore new opportunities within their farming activities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agribusiness operators, agricultural development agencies, cooperative organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that incorporate opportunity recognition and agricultural entrepreneurship into advisory services. The findings may also assist farmers in identifying viable opportunities, diversifying their enterprises, responding to market changes, and improving the sustainability of their agricultural businesses. The study concludes that extension services can contribute to improving farmers’ adoption of opportunity identification techniques and support more informed agricultural enterprise decisions. It is therefore recommended that extension programmes provide practical training on market observation, customer needs assessment, opportunity evaluation, enterprise identification, and agricultural market analysis. Extension agents should also provide timely information on emerging market and enterprise opportunities to enable farmers to make informed decisions and develop viable agricultural businesses.
