Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Queen Bee Management

Abstract

Queen bee management is an important aspect of beekeeping because the queen bee plays a central role in colony reproduction, population maintenance, productivity, and overall hive performance. Appropriate queen management practices can help beekeepers maintain strong and productive colonies, improve brood production, reduce colony weakness, and support sustainable honey and other hive-product production. Extension services provide farmers with technical information, practical training, and advisory support on effective queen bee management practices. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of queen bee management practices. The study will assess the extent of farmers’ access to extension services and determine how such services influence their adoption of recommended queen bee management practices. It will examine farmers’ exposure to extension visits, training, demonstrations, advisory contacts, and educational materials relating to queen management. The study will also assess farmers’ adoption of practices such as queen identification, queen replacement, queen rearing, colony monitoring, introduction of new queens, and management of queenless colonies. The study will focus on extension services, farmers, queen bee management, queen identification, queen rearing, queen replacement, colony monitoring, queen introduction, colony productivity, brood development, hive management, and beekeeping practices. Information will be obtained on farmers’ knowledge and application of recommended queen management procedures and the sources of information available to them. The study will also identify challenges such as inadequate extension contact, limited technical knowledge, lack of suitable equipment, and difficulties in obtaining quality queen bees. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from beekeepers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on access to extension services and adoption of queen bee management practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and standard deviations. Inferential techniques such as correlation and regression analysis may also be used to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of recommended queen bee management practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of queen bee management practices. Farmers who receive regular extension training, demonstrations, farm visits, and technical advice may demonstrate better knowledge and greater application of appropriate queen identification, replacement, rearing, and colony monitoring practices. The study may also indicate that inadequate extension coverage, limited access to quality queen bees, insufficient equipment, and lack of specialised technical knowledge could constrain the adoption of recommended practices. The study will be useful to beekeepers, agricultural extension agents, apiculture development organisations, agricultural agencies, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in beekeeping development. It may provide useful information for improving extension programmes and strengthening farmers’ technical capacity in queen bee management. The findings may also assist relevant organisations in developing practical training programmes that address specific queen management challenges and improve the productivity and sustainability of beekeeping enterprises. The study concludes that extension services are important for improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of appropriate queen bee management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and apiculture development organisations should provide regular training, demonstrations, farm visits, and advisory services on queen identification, rearing, replacement, introduction, and colony monitoring. Extension programmes should also improve farmers’ access to appropriate equipment and quality queen bees to support effective colony management and sustainable beekeeping production.
