Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Sesame Weed Management Practices

Abstract

Sesame production is an important agricultural activity that provides food, income, employment, and opportunities for agricultural diversification among smallholder farmers. Weed infestation is one of the major production challenges that can affect sesame growth, nutrient utilization, and overall farm productivity. Effective weed management therefore requires farmers to have adequate knowledge of appropriate control methods and the ability to apply recommended practices at the right stages of crop development. Extension services can provide farmers with technical information and practical guidance on effective sesame weed management. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of sesame weed management practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services, determine their knowledge of recommended weed management techniques, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of appropriate weed control practices in sesame production. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of weed management information provided to sesame farmers. The study will focus on extension services, sesame weed management, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, weed identification, timely weeding, manual weeding, mechanical weed control, cultural weed management, appropriate herbicide use, weed monitoring, field sanitation, crop spacing, and adoption of recommended weed management practices. Information will be obtained from sesame farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and the extent to which the information received is applied in their production activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected sesame farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of sesame weed management practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended sesame weed management practices. Farmers with regular access to extension agents, demonstrations, and timely technical information may demonstrate greater use of appropriate weeding methods, field sanitation, crop spacing, weed monitoring, and safe herbicide application. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and practical advisory support contribute to improved application of weed management practices among sesame farmers. The study will be useful to sesame farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at improving weed management and sesame production. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ specific challenges in identifying, preventing, and controlling weeds in sesame fields. The study concludes that extension services are an important source of technical information and support for improving farmers’ adoption of sesame weed management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, training sessions, and follow-up advisory services for sesame farmers. Extension programmes should emphasize timely weed control, appropriate cultural and mechanical methods, safe herbicide application, and proper field management to support effective weed management and sustainable sesame production.
