Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Participation in Agricultural Development Evaluation
Abstract
Agricultural development programmes are designed to improve farmers’ productivity, livelihoods, access to resources, and adoption of improved agricultural practices. Evaluating these programmes is important for determining whether their activities and interventions are addressing farmers’ needs and achieving their intended objectives. Farmers’ participation in agricultural development evaluation can provide useful information about the effectiveness, relevance, and implementation of agricultural programmes. Extension services can facilitate farmers’ involvement by providing information, mobilizing participants, and creating opportunities for farmers to contribute to programme assessment. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ participation in agricultural development evaluation. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services, determine the extent of their participation in agricultural programme evaluation activities, and examine how extension support influences their involvement in providing feedback and assessing agricultural development interventions. It will also assess the forms of extension support available to farmers during evaluation activities. The study will focus on extension services, farmers’ participation, agricultural development evaluation, extension contact, farmer feedback, programme assessment, evaluation meetings, participatory evaluation, information sharing, agricultural programme monitoring, needs assessment, feedback provision, and farmers’ involvement in development decision-making. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and their level of participation in activities associated with the evaluation of agricultural development programmes. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ participation in agricultural development evaluation. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may improve farmers’ participation in agricultural development evaluation activities. Farmers who have regular contact with extension personnel and receive information about evaluation processes may demonstrate greater involvement in programme meetings, feedback activities, needs assessments, and evaluation exercises. The study may also indicate that effective communication and participatory extension approaches encourage farmers to contribute their experiences and opinions to agricultural programme evaluation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, government institutions, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for improving participatory approaches to agricultural programme evaluation and strengthening communication between farmers and programme implementers. The findings may also assist development organizations in incorporating farmers’ experiences and feedback into the assessment and improvement of agricultural interventions. The study concludes that extension services can play an important role in encouraging farmers’ participation in agricultural development evaluation. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer mobilization, information sharing, participatory meetings, feedback mechanisms, and evaluation training. Extension personnel should create opportunities for farmers to contribute meaningfully to the assessment of agricultural development programmes so that future interventions can better reflect farmers’ needs and experiences.
