Abstract

Agricultural innovation competitions provide opportunities for farmers to present, demonstrate, and promote innovative ideas, practices, technologies, and solutions developed to address agricultural challenges. These competitions can encourage creativity, knowledge sharing, recognition of successful innovations, and wider dissemination of improved agricultural practices. Agricultural extension services can support farmers by providing information about available competitions, assisting with innovation development, and guiding farmers through participation requirements and application processes. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ participation in agricultural innovation competitions. It will assess the extent to which farmers receive extension information and support concerning agricultural innovation competitions and determine how such services influence their participation. The study will also examine the types of extension services available to farmers and the frequency with which farmers receive information and guidance relating to agricultural innovation opportunities. The study will focus on extension services such as advisory visits, innovation-related training, practical demonstrations, information dissemination, technical guidance, farmer group activities, and assistance with competition applications. Farmers’ participation will be assessed based on awareness of competitions, willingness to participate, application for competitions, attendance at innovation events, presentation of innovations, and involvement in related agricultural innovation activities. Farmers’ sources of information about competitions and their access to extension agents will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and relevant participation records where available. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize farmers’ access to extension services and participation in agricultural innovation competitions. Correlation and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ participation in agricultural innovation competitions. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a positive effect on farmers’ participation in agricultural innovation competitions. Farmers who receive regular information, technical guidance, training, and encouragement from extension agents may be more likely to become aware of available competitions and participate in them than farmers with limited extension contact. The study may also reveal that practical support from extension agents can improve farmers’ confidence in presenting their innovations and understanding competition requirements. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural innovation organizations, research institutions, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote farmer innovation and participation in agricultural competitions. The findings may also assist agricultural development agencies and competition organizers in creating better communication and support systems for farmers interested in showcasing innovative agricultural practices. The study concludes that extension services can play an important role in improving farmers’ awareness and participation in agricultural innovation competitions. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular information, training, technical guidance, and application support to farmers interested in agricultural innovation competitions. Extension programmes should also encourage farmers to document and develop their innovations so that they can effectively participate in available recognition and competition opportunities.
