Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Participation in Agritourism Activities

Abstract

Agritourism involves the integration of agricultural production with tourism-related activities that allow visitors to experience farming, rural lifestyles, agricultural products, recreational activities, and farm-based learning opportunities. Farmers’ participation in agritourism can contribute to enterprise diversification, additional income generation, rural employment, and improved utilization of farm resources. Extension services can provide farmers with information, technical guidance, training, and advisory support that may encourage their participation in agritourism activities. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ participation in agritourism activities. It will assess farmers’ access to extension services related to agritourism, determine their level of participation in different agritourism activities, and examine how extension information and advisory support influence farmers’ involvement in farm-based tourism enterprises and activities. The study will focus on extension contact, extension education, advisory services, agritourism information, farmer training, farm tours, recreational activities, educational farm visits, agricultural demonstrations, farm hospitality, visitor management, and participation in agritourism activities. It will also examine farmers’ involvement in activities such as crop harvesting experiences, livestock interaction, nature-based recreation, farm product sales, and other visitor-oriented agricultural activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires to assess their access to extension services and participation in agritourism activities. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ participation in agritourism activities. The level and forms of farmer participation will also be assessed. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a significant effect on farmers’ participation in agritourism activities. Farmers with greater access to relevant extension information, training, and advisory support may demonstrate higher participation in farm tours, recreational activities, educational visits, farm hospitality, agricultural demonstrations, and other agritourism services. The study may also identify specific extension information and support needs that influence farmers’ willingness and capacity to participate in agritourism. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agritourism operators, tourism organisations, rural development agencies, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote agritourism participation among farmers. The findings may also assist farmers in diversifying their agricultural enterprises, improving visitor services, increasing farm income, and making productive use of available agricultural resources. The study concludes that extension services can provide important information and technical support for encouraging farmers’ participation in agritourism activities. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes incorporate agritourism education, practical training, enterprise planning, visitor management, marketing, hospitality, and safety guidance to support greater farmer participation in sustainable agritourism activities.
