Effect of Extension Services on Fish Farmers’ Adoption of Improved Aquaculture Practices
Abstract
Improved aquaculture practices are important for enhancing fish production, maintaining fish health, improving resource utilization, and increasing the efficiency of fish farming operations. Fish farmers require adequate technical knowledge and practical skills to apply improved practices relating to feeding, stocking, water quality, disease prevention, pond management, and harvesting. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with relevant information, training, demonstrations, and technical guidance needed to understand and adopt improved aquaculture practices. This study will examine the effect of extension services on fish farmers’ adoption of improved aquaculture practices. It will assess how extension contact, advisory information, farmer training, demonstrations, and technical support influence fish farmers’ knowledge and application of recommended aquaculture practices. The study will also examine the extent to which fish farmers exposed to extension services apply improved techniques in their farming operations. The study will focus on extension visits, aquaculture training, field demonstrations, group meetings, technical advisory services, and information dissemination. Farmers’ adoption of improved practices relating to fish species selection, stocking density, feeding methods, water quality management, pond preparation, fish health, disease prevention, harvesting, and post-harvest handling will be assessed. The study will also examine farmers’ access to extension information and the frequency of interaction with extension personnel. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from fish farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate adoption assessment instruments. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between extension services and farmers’ adoption of improved aquaculture practices. The study is expected to reveal that access to regular and relevant extension services may increase fish farmers’ adoption of improved aquaculture practices. Farmers who receive frequent technical guidance, practical training, demonstrations, and timely advisory information may demonstrate greater application of improved feeding, stocking, water management, fish health, and pond management practices. The findings may also identify specific aquaculture practices where farmers require additional extension support. The study will be useful to fish farmers, aquaculture extension agents, fisheries development agencies, government agricultural institutions, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening aquaculture extension programmes, improving farmer training, promoting appropriate production technologies, and developing advisory services that respond to the technical and production needs of fish farmers. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can contribute to the adoption of improved aquaculture practices by providing fish farmers with relevant information, practical skills, and technical guidance. It is therefore recommended that fisheries and agricultural extension organisations strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and timely advisory services to promote effective adoption of improved aquaculture practices and sustainable fish production.
