Effect of Extension Training on Beekeepers’ Knowledge of Modern Hive Management

Abstract

Modern hive management is an important aspect of beekeeping because appropriate management practices can improve colony health, honey production, hive productivity, and the efficient use of beekeeping resources. Beekeepers require adequate technical knowledge to manage modern hives effectively and respond to changes in colony condition. Extension training provides an important means of transferring practical information and skills to beekeepers through organised training sessions, demonstrations, field instruction, and technical guidance. This study will examine the effect of extension training on beekeepers’ knowledge of modern hive management. The study will assess the extent to which extension training improves beekeepers’ understanding of modern hive management techniques. It will also examine the knowledge gained by beekeepers in areas such as hive inspection, colony management, hive maintenance, swarm control, feeding, pest management, and honey harvesting. The study will focus on the frequency and content of extension training, practical demonstrations, training materials, field-based instruction, and technical guidance provided to beekeepers. Knowledge of modern hive management will be assessed in relation to hive selection and placement, hive inspection, colony strength assessment, brood management, queen management, swarm prevention, hive maintenance, pest and disease control, feeding practices, honey harvesting, and hygienic handling of bee products. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from beekeepers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment items designed to measure their exposure to extension training and understanding of modern hive management practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension training and beekeepers’ knowledge of modern hive management. The study is expected to reveal that extension training has a positive effect on beekeepers’ knowledge of modern hive management. Beekeepers who receive regular and practical training may demonstrate better knowledge of hive inspection, colony management, swarm control, hive maintenance, pest and disease management, and honey harvesting techniques. The study may also identify specific areas where beekeepers have limited technical knowledge and require additional training and extension support. The study will be useful to beekeepers, agricultural extension agents, beekeeping associations, agricultural development agencies, government institutions, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may assist extension providers in designing practical and relevant training programmes that address the technical knowledge needs of beekeepers. It may also contribute to improved capacity building and more effective dissemination of modern beekeeping information. The study concludes that extension training is an important approach for improving beekeepers’ knowledge of modern hive management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training, field demonstrations, regular technical guidance, and follow-up support for beekeepers. Training programmes should emphasise practical hive management skills, colony monitoring, pest and disease control, hive maintenance, and appropriate harvesting techniques to improve beekeepers’ technical knowledge and support efficient beekeeping production.
