Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Aflatoxin Testing Practices

Abstract

Aflatoxin testing involves the examination of agricultural products to determine the presence and level of aflatoxins, which are toxic substances produced by certain fungi that can contaminate crops and stored food products. Aflatoxin contamination can affect food safety, reduce the quality and marketability of agricultural produce, and create health risks for consumers. Extension training can provide farmers with knowledge about aflatoxin risks, testing procedures, interpretation of test results, and appropriate measures for managing contaminated produce. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of aflatoxin testing practices. It will assess how extension training influences farmers’ knowledge and use of appropriate methods for identifying and testing agricultural produce for aflatoxin contamination. The study will also determine the extent to which farmers apply aflatoxin testing practices in the production, storage, processing, and marketing of agricultural products. The study will focus on extension training, aflatoxin awareness, sample collection, testing procedures, use of testing kits, interpretation of test results, moisture management, storage conditions, produce screening, contaminated produce identification, and food safety practices. It will also examine farmers’ access to testing information and practical demonstrations provided through extension training and how such training supports the adoption of aflatoxin testing practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension training, knowledge of aflatoxin testing, and adoption of testing practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of aflatoxin testing practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of aflatoxin testing practices. Farmers who receive practical training may demonstrate greater awareness of aflatoxin risks and increased use of appropriate sampling, testing, result interpretation, and produce screening procedures. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and access to relevant testing information improve farmers’ confidence in identifying and managing aflatoxin contamination. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, food safety agencies, agricultural cooperatives, produce marketers, testing laboratories, government agricultural institutions, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote food safety and aflatoxin management. The findings may also assist farmers in improving produce quality, reducing the risk of contaminated products entering food and feed chains, and meeting relevant market requirements. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improving farmers’ adoption of aflatoxin testing practices and strengthening food safety management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes incorporate practical training on aflatoxin risks, sample collection, testing procedures, test-result interpretation, and appropriate responses to contaminated produce. Extension agents should also facilitate farmers’ access to reliable testing services and promote regular screening of susceptible agricultural products.
