Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Financing Practices
Abstract
Agricultural financing practices are important for enabling farmers to obtain and manage the financial resources required for farm production, expansion, and sustainability. Farmers require adequate knowledge of financing options, financial planning, credit management, savings, budgeting, and other financial practices to make effective use of available resources. Extension training can provide farmers with practical information and guidance on agricultural financing and may improve their ability to understand and adopt appropriate financial practices in their farming activities. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agricultural financing practices. It will assess how extension training influences farmers’ knowledge and use of appropriate financing practices and determine the extent to which trained farmers apply financial management and financing strategies in their agricultural enterprises. The study will also examine the relationship between participation in extension training and farmers’ adoption of agricultural financing practices. The study will focus on extension training related to agricultural credit, savings, budgeting, financial planning, loan application procedures, credit management, repayment planning, investment decisions, and financial record management. It will also examine farmers’ adoption of financing practices such as accessing formal agricultural loans, using cooperative financing arrangements, maintaining farm savings, preparing farm budgets, evaluating borrowing needs, managing loan repayment, and allocating financial resources to productive farm activities. Farmers’ access to financing information and challenges affecting adoption will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their participation in extension training and adoption of agricultural financing practices. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Correlation and regression analysis will also be used to examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of agricultural financing practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of agricultural financing practices. Farmers who participate in relevant training programmes may demonstrate greater knowledge of available financing options and improved application of budgeting, savings, credit management, and loan repayment practices. However, limited access to financial institutions, high interest rates, inadequate collateral, complicated loan procedures, insufficient financing opportunities, and limited extension training coverage may restrict farmers’ ability to apply appropriate financing practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, financial institutions, government agricultural agencies, cooperative organisations, agricultural development programmes, non-governmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening extension training programmes that address farmers’ financial and financing needs. The study may also assist extension agencies and financial institutions in developing practical training on agricultural credit, financial planning, savings, loan management, and responsible use of agricultural financing. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to farmers’ adoption of appropriate agricultural financing practices by improving their knowledge of available financial options and strengthening their financial management skills. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies should incorporate agricultural financing topics into regular farmer training programmes and strengthen collaboration with financial institutions and cooperative organisations. Farmers should also be provided with practical information on credit access, budgeting, savings, loan management, and repayment planning to support effective and sustainable use of agricultural financing.
