Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Risk Management Practices

Abstract

Agricultural production is exposed to various risks and uncertainties that can affect farm productivity, income, and the sustainability of farming activities. These risks may result from adverse weather conditions, pest and disease outbreaks, market price fluctuations, input shortages, production failures, and other unexpected events. Agricultural risk management practices provide farmers with strategies for identifying, reducing, and managing these risks. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills needed to understand and adopt appropriate risk management measures. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agricultural risk management practices. It will assess the extent to which extension training improves farmers’ knowledge and use of recommended risk management strategies. The study will also examine the contribution of training sessions, practical demonstrations, advisory services, and extension contact to farmers’ adoption of practices designed to reduce production, market, financial, and environmental risks. The study will focus on extension training, agricultural risk management, farmers’ risk awareness, risk identification, crop diversification, enterprise diversification, improved production practices, farm planning, market information, agricultural insurance, savings practices, emergency planning, risk reduction strategies, and adoption of agricultural risk management practices. It will also assess farmers’ sources of risk management information and identify the major challenges that may limit their adoption of recommended risk management practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training, knowledge of agricultural risks, and adoption of risk management practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agricultural risk management practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of agricultural risk management practices. Farmers who receive regular and practical extension training may demonstrate greater awareness and use of strategies such as enterprise diversification, improved farm planning, use of market information, agricultural insurance, savings, and other measures for reducing farm-related risks. Adoption may also vary according to farmers’ access to extension services, availability of risk management resources, farming experience, and perceived effectiveness of recommended practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural cooperatives, insurance organisations, government agricultural agencies, financial institutions, development organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that address agricultural risk management and improve farmers’ capacity to cope with uncertainties. The findings may also assist stakeholders in designing practical training programmes that promote appropriate and affordable risk management strategies among farmers. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improved adoption of agricultural risk management practices by strengthening farmers’ knowledge, awareness, and practical capacity to manage agricultural uncertainties. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular training and demonstrations on risk identification, risk reduction, diversification, insurance, farm planning, and other appropriate management strategies. Farmers should also be encouraged to apply suitable risk management practices to protect farm income, improve resilience, and support sustainable agricultural production.
