Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Agritourism Safety Practices

Abstract

Agritourism safety practices are important for protecting visitors, farmers, workers, and other participants who engage in farm-based tourism activities. Farm environments may contain hazards associated with agricultural machinery, livestock, farm chemicals, tools, uneven surfaces, water bodies, and other operational activities. Extension training can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills needed to identify potential hazards, establish appropriate safety measures, and manage agritourism activities in a safer and more organised manner. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agritourism safety practices. It will assess the extent to which extension training influences farmers’ knowledge and use of recommended safety measures in agritourism activities. The study will also examine the contribution of safety demonstrations, training sessions, advisory services, information dissemination, and practical guidance to farmers’ adoption of appropriate agritourism safety practices. The study will focus on extension training, agritourism safety, farmers’ knowledge, hazard identification, visitor orientation, safety signage, restricted areas, machinery safety, livestock handling, chemical safety, pathway management, emergency procedures, first-aid preparedness, protective measures, and adoption of agritourism safety practices. It will also assess farmers’ sources of safety information and identify challenges that may affect their ability to implement recommended safety measures during farm-based tourism activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers involved or interested in agritourism using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training, knowledge of agritourism safety practices, and level of adoption. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of agritourism safety practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of agritourism safety practices. Farmers who receive regular and practical safety training may demonstrate greater use of measures such as visitor orientation, safety signage, hazard identification, restricted-area management, machinery and livestock safety, chemical handling, and emergency procedures. The level of adoption may also vary according to farmers’ access to extension services, availability of safety materials, farm facilities, agritourism experience, and perceived importance of visitor safety. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, tourism operators, farmer cooperatives, government agricultural and tourism agencies, safety organisations, development organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that integrate safety education into agritourism development. The findings may also assist relevant stakeholders in developing practical training, safety guidelines, and demonstration programmes that promote safer farm-based tourism activities. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to improved adoption of agritourism safety practices by increasing farmers’ knowledge, awareness, and practical skills in identifying and managing farm-based tourism hazards. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies collaborate with tourism and safety organisations to provide regular training and demonstrations on visitor orientation, hazard identification, safety signage, emergency response, machinery and livestock safety, and chemical handling. Farmers should also be encouraged to implement appropriate safety measures to protect visitors, reduce accidents, and support sustainable agritourism development.
